What is Pickleball?

What is Pickleball?

Pickleball originated in 1965 in Washington state. It was created as a family game by three dads - Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum - who created the game after a snarky response from the kids about being bored. They used old Ping-Pong paddles and a perforated ball on a badminton court. If you're curious about that name, you’re not alone - Joanne Pritchard had been part of a crew racing team where there was an A Boat, a B Boat, and the Pickle Boat (this boat held leftovers or odds and ends rowers) to her, Pickleball was just that, an amalgamation of several different games fused together, and it stuck. Pickleball has grown exponentially in the past few decades. In the states, Seattle is the biggest fan - there are three courts per 20,000 residents, which is the highest ratio among all cities. Washington State has even adopted Pickleball as its official sport, but the Pickleball capital of the world is Naples, FL.

Pickleball E-Commerce Local resident Karen Clark, a former tennis enthusiast who switched to playing pickleball several years ago at Raintree Country Club, is so sold on the game that last spring, she opened her online store, picklesandpaddles.com. “I had wanted for some time to launch my own business using my background in design and photography, and I realized that all the fun stuff for pickleball was missing: gifts and shirts and hats.” Her fi rst two sales were to Canadians, and today she has customers worldwide, including pickleball team sales through a company based in St. Louis. Her No. 1 seller so far is a pink ladies’ T-shirt reading “Drinks and Dinks.” Clark echoes the belief that the social aspect of pickleball is key to its growth. “I like it more than tennis because everyone is a little more relaxed. You can still be competitive, but people are all happy playing pickleball.”
